Become a Volunteer Tutor - Open a New Chapter in Someone’s Life! Literacy Volunteers of Oswego County is about to schedule another 3 hour Orientation session - depending on the availability of interested prospective tutors! Meetings will be held at Pathfinder Bank, 34 East Bridge Street, Suite 301 in Oswego. Let us know soon if you'd like to join us!!! According to the National Institute for Literacy, one in five American adults struggle with everyday reading and writing. They have trouble filling out a job application, understanding medicine labels or reading a story to their child. Twenty percent of the adults in Oswego County have skills considered to be “functionally illiterate”. YOU can make a difference in their lives! Literacy Volunteers of Oswego County, Inc. is seeking adult volunteers, to participate in a Tutor Training workshop in order to help us meet the needs of these individuals. The workshop consists of an Orientation session where more information is given to make an informed decision whether they would indeed like to become a Literacy Volunteers tutor, and three 3 hour sessions with daytime and evenings available to choose from. The training sessions will equip participants with techniques and strategies for tutoring adults in basic literacy. This includes sections on teaching adult learners, strategies for teaching reading and writing, and an overview of the study materials available for tutoring. There is a $25.00 fee to cover tutor training materials that the tutor keeps for reference. Limited scholarships are available. In order to become an LVOC tutor you must be at least 18 years old, have received a High School diploma or GED, and are able to read at a 12th grade level. No previous experience is necessary. After completion of the 12 hour training, tutors will meet with their learners for 2 hours every week in a public place, assigning homework or "extended learning" assignments in between tutoring sessions. Tutoring is done on a one-on-one basis and the tutors are matched with a learner according to personalities, and preferred location & meeting times. ”Having tutors readily available when prospective learners contact LVOC is a critical component of the program,” said Jane Murphy, Executive Director. “Tutors share that they get as much out of the program as their learner does!” Volunteer tutors are the cornerstone of Literacy Volunteers and this training covers a variety of topics to help the tutors work effectively with their adult learners. A support network of experienced tutors and LVOC staff are available to both learners and tutors.
