Basic
Literacy: Any student 16 years or older who has difficulty
with reading skills and is out of school, is eligible for our program.
LVOC will tutor an adult to read up to the 8th grade reading level.
With the help of our resource materials, tutors have access to many
different tools to teach an adult to read. We will also help them
with writing and simple math skills. Some of our students have learning
difficulties and we have appropriate materials for use with these
students.
Computer
Literacy: LVOC has a computer literacy program in
place for those students with the most basic reading skills. Basic
computer skills are taught at the LVOC Computer Lab at the Oswego
office with several computer workstations available for student
use. Students progress at their own speed with help from the computer
lab coordinator or their regular reading tutor. The computer lab
is available by appointment Monday through Friday 9am through 3pm.
Becoming
an LVOC Tutor: LVOC is always seeking people who
are interested in becoming tutors. The first step to becoming a
tutor requires participation in an 18-hour Tutor Training Workshop.
Training covers a variety of topics such as Real-Life Literacy and
Introducing Reading Strategies. Tutor Training Workshops are held
several times a year at our Oswego office. A one time non-refundable
fee of $25 is charged for training materials, attendance at
all sessions is mandatory.
Once
the Tutor Training Workshop has been successfully completed, a tutor
is matched with a student. Tutors are expected to meet with
their students for 2 hours a week in a public location, including
our office from 9am-3pm, Monday through Friday.
We have a
complete list of Literacy
Volunteers approved sites and times available. Students are expected
to provide their own transportation and to complete weekly homework
assignments.

person CAN make a
